free from matter insoluble in quinoline which comprises

heating the coaltar pitch or a pitch obtained from a

commercial coaltar, containing the matter which is inioluble

in quinoline, in the presence of a mixture of aromatic and

aliphatic solvents both having bp between 50 to 350°C at a

temperature in the range of 30 to 180°C, wherein the ratio

of aromatic solvent-to-coaltar pitch being in the range of

0.2 to 3.0, the ratio of aliphatic solvent-to-coaltar pitch

being in the range of 0.2 to 2.0, to cause the coagulation

of the pitch-solvents solution resulting in the precipitation

of the matter insoluble in quinoline, allowing the precipitate

to settle down, removing the precipitated particles completely

by decantation distilling the solution at temperatures upto

350°C under a partial pressure in the range of 6 to 40cm Hg

A process for the production of purified terephthalic acid

(PTA) from crude terephthalic acid (CTA) which contains

at least one organic impurity, said process comprising:

(i) mixing the CTA with an aqueous medium to form

an aqueous CTA mixture;

(li) heating the mixture to dissolve substantially all of

the CTA in the aqueous medium and thereby

produce a solution of CTA;

(iii) hydrogenating the aqueous CTA solution to reduce

chemically at least some of the said organic

impurity and to form an aqueous stream of purified

terephthalic acid (PTA); and

(iv) decreasing the pressure and temperature of the

aqueous PTA stream in a manner such as herein

described to effect crystallisation of PTA;

wherein said heating of the mixture of CTA with aqueous

medium being effected at least in part by introducing into

ihe mixture steam having a temperature greater than that of

said aqueous mixture, the steam being derived from the

crystallisation section, characterised in that the steam so

derived contains paratoluic acid and is introduced into said

mixture via at least two steam injection stages each supplied

with steam from respective stages of the crystallisation

section in such a way that steam from a higher temperature

and pressure crystallisation stage is supplied to an injection

device downstream of an injection device supplied with

steam from a lower temperature and pressure crystallisation

stage, the pressure of the CTA mixture being increased as

it passes from one steam injection stage to the next.

in the presence of a metal oxide for 1 to 48 hours

at a temperature of 20 to 35°C.

(iii) Separating the insoluble part from the reaction

mixture from which the desired compound, the

alkyl ether of the binapthyl quinonoid, is isolated

in a known manner.

(IV) Suspending said alkyl ether of the said compound

in an organic solvent and treating with a reducing

agent such as heroin described for 1 to 10 hrs in

an inert atmoshpere.

(v) Working up the reaction mixture in a known

manner to obtain the binaphthyl hydroquinonoid

compound.

(yi) Reacting the alkyl ether obtained from step (iii)

With a compound containing an amins gr»up such

as herein described followed by work-up and

purification in a known manner to obtain aminio

substituted derivatives of the binaphthyl quinonoid

compound.
