NOTIFICATION
G.O. (P) No. 1/2024/F&WLD. Dated, Thiruvananthapuram, 3rd January 2024
WHEREAS, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub section (1) of section
18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972), the Government of
Kerala, as per notification issued under G.O(P) No.36/2006/F&WLD dated 6th October,
2006 and published as S.R.O. No.717/2006 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No.1584
dated 6th October, 2006, the erratum issued under G.O.(P)No.37/09/F&WLD dated 27th
August 2009, and published in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No.1568 dated 28th August,
2009, have declared the intention to constitute 3200 Hectare (approximate) of land

comprised in Block No.58 and Block No. 62 of Kottakamboor village and Vattavada village
respectively of Devikulam Taluk of Idukki District excluding the patta lands comprised
therein as a Sanctuary to be known as “Kurinjimala Sanctuary”;
AND WHEREAS, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 18B of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972), the Government of Kerala, as per
notification issued under G.O. (P)No.3/2022/F&WLD dated the 16th January, 2022 and
published as S.R.O. No.100/2022 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No. 333 dated 28th
January 2022, had appointed Dr. A. Kowsigan IAS, to act as ‘Collector’ under the Act, to
inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of rights of any person in or over
the land comprised within the limits of the above said sanctuary;
Now, THEREFORE, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 18B of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972) and in supersession of the
notification issued under G.O.(P) No.3/2022/F&WLD dated the 16th January, 2022 and
published as S.R.O.No.100/2022 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No.333 dated 28th
January 2022, the Government of Kerala hereby appoint the Sub Collector, Devikulam,
who has been given the additional charge of the Special Officer, Kurinjimala Sanctuary as per
G.O.(Rt) No.2122/2022/GAD dated 23rd May 2022, to act as ‘Collector’ under the Act to
inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of right of any person in or over the
land comprised within the limits of the above said sanctuary.

Explanatory Note
(This does not form part of the notification, but is intended to indicate its general purport).
In exercise of the powers conferred by sub section (1) of section 18 of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972), the Government of Kerala, vide
notification issued under G.O.(P) No.36/2006/F&WLD dated the 6th October, 2006 and
published as S.R.O No.717/2006 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No.1584 dated the 6th
October, 2006 declared their intention to constitute 3200 hectare (approximate) of land
comprised in survey No.58/1 and Survey No.62 of Kottakamboor village and Vattavada
village respectively of Devikulam Taluk, Idukki District excluding the patta lands comprised
therein as a sanctuary to be known as "Kurinjimala Sanctuary".

In the description of the said sanctuary, it was notified as Survey No.58/1 of
Kottakkamboor Village and Survey No.62 in Vattavada Village. By an erratum issued under
G.O.(P) No.37/09/F&WLD dated 27th August 2009, and published in the Kerala Gazette
Extraordinary No.1568 dated 28th August, 2009, in the explanatory note, Survey No. 58/1 and
Survey No.62, was rectified as Block No.58 and Block No.62 respectively.
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 18B of the Wildlife (Protection)
Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972), the Government of Kerala vide notification issued under
G.O.(P) No.3/2022/F&WLD dated the 16th January, 2022 and published as S.R.O.
No.100/2022 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No. 333 dated 28th January 2022, and in
supersession of the notification issued under G.O(Ms) No.74/F&WLD dated the 12th December
2007 and published as S.R.O. No 1075/2007 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No. 2291
dated the 22nd December 2007, had appointed Dr. A Kowsigan IAS, to act as 'Collector' under
the Act, to inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of right of any
person in or over the land comprised within the limits of the above said sanctuary; The said
procedures has not been completed so far.
The Government of Kerala, vide G.O.(Rt) No.2122/2022/GAD dated 23rd May
2022, have decide to give the additional charge of the Special Officer of Kurinjimal
Sanctuary to the Sub Collector, Devikulam. Therefore, Government have decided to
rescind the notification issued under G.O.(P) No.3/2022/F&WLD dated the 16th January, 2022
and published as S.R.O. No.100/2022 in the Kerala Gazette Extraordinary No. 333 dated
28th January 2022 and to appoint Sub Collector, Devikulam under section 18B of Wildlife
(Protection) Act, 1972 (Central Act 53 of 1972) to act as ‘Collector’ under the said Act to
inquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of right of any person in or over
the land comprised within the limits of the Kurinjimala Sanctuary;
The notification is intended to achieve the above object.
