Subject:

Designation of Leh as a Model Town for the Implementation of Municipal Solid Waste

Management Rules, 2016.

S.O. 01: Pursuant to the order of the Honourable National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Original Application No.

606/2018, all States and Union Territories of India were directed to implement the Municipal Solid Waste

Management Rules, 2016. In compliance with this directive, the Housing and Urban Development Department,

Government of Jammu and Kashmir, issued Notification No. 136-HUD of 2019 on 23rd May 2019, designating Leh

as a Model Town for the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

However, subsequent to the J&K Reorganization Act, 2019 and the NGT Order in OA No. 606/2018, the notification

was amended to exclude Leh District. Now, in accordance with the NGT Order dated 16th January 2019 in Original

Application No. 606/2018, the competent authority sanctions the designation of Leh as a Model Town for the

implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 within a period of one year from this notification.

“No legal responsibility is accepted for the contents of publication of advertisements/publications in this part of The

Ladakh Gazette. Persons notifying the advertisements/public notices will remain solely responsible for the legal

consequences and also for any other misrepresentation etc.”
