Order:-
No. 530, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Disaster Management Wing, D.M.II
Section, dated 4th December 2024.
In the letter read above, the Additional Chief Secretary / Commissioner of Revenue Administration and State
Relief Commissioner has Stated as follows:-
(a) Tamil Nadu is multi-hazard prone State and faces the brunt of the cyclonic storms during the Northeast Monsoon
period and in addition, the State also faces spells of heavy downpours and cloud bursts resulting in damages due to floods.
(b) During the current Northeast Monsoon 2024, the cyclonic storm “Fengal” which originated in Bay of Bengal made
its landfall between Mahabalipuram and Cuddalore, near Puducherry, between 30.11.2024 23:30 Hrs and 01.12.2024
11:30 Hrs. Post-landfall, the system stalled due to the influence of a high-pressure zone over the Bay of Bengal.
This stalling caused the cyclone to stay near Puducherry, leading to a prolonged period of extreme rainfall over Tamil Nadu.
Hence, many districts viz., Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam,
Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai and Krishnagiri Districts experienced widespread heavy to very
heavy rainfall from 26.11.2024 to 02.12.2024 causing inundation in low lying areas. Moreover, due to short duration high
intensity rainfall, many tanks got filled and flooding occurred in many pockets due to breaches to the tanks.
