२४ अगस्त, २०१४ को जम्मू और कश्मीर के कुपवाड़ा जिले के सामान्य क्षेत्र गुरदाजी में तलाशी अभियान के दौरान ढोक के नजदीक कुछ आतंकवादियों की आवाजाही नोटिस की गई, जिन्होंने सैन्य टुकड़ियों पर अंधाधुंध गोलीबारी शुरू कर दी। गोलीबारी के दौरान नायक नीरज के साथी के बुलेट प्रूफ जैकेट पर गोली लगी। अपनी व्यक्तिगत सुरक्षा की परवाह किए बिना, नायक नीरज रेंगते हुए आगे बढ़े और उन्होंने अपने साथी को छुड़ाया। एक आतंकवादी ने हथगोले फेंके और नायक नीरज पर भारी गोलीबारी कर दी। साहसपूर्ण कृत्य से नायक नीरज आतंकवादी के निकट आ गए और उसे मार गिराया। उसी समय उनके ऊपर अन्य आतंकवादी ने हमला कर दिया, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप उनकी राइफल गिर गई और आतंकवादी ने उनकी छाती में गोली मार दी। गम्भीर चोट के बावजूद अद्वितीय साहस का परिचय देते हुए वे आतंकवादी पर टूट पड़े, उनके हथियार छीन लिये और हाथों हाथ लड़ाई में उसे मार गिराया। बेहोश होने तक उन्होंने सुरक्षित स्थान तक जाने के लिए मना कर दिया और बाद में उन्हें सुरक्षित स्थान तक पहुँचाया गया परन्तु गम्भीर चोट के कारण वे शहीद हो गए।
नायक नीरज कुमार सिंह ने व्यक्तिगत रूप से दो आतंकवादियों को समाप्त करते हुए और भारतीय सेना की उच्चतम परम्पराअों के अनुरूप अपने जीवन का बलिदान देते हुए दृढ़ साहस और अत्यधिक उत्कृष्ट पराक्रम का परिचय दिया।

No. 2-Pres/2015.—The President is pleased to approve the award of the "Ashoka Chakra" to the undermentioned person for the acts of most conspicuous gallantry:—

THE RASHTRIYA RIFLES (POSTHUMOUS)
(Effective date of the award : 24 August, 2014)
On 24 August, 2014, during a search operation in General area Gurdaji of Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir, movement of few terrorists close to a Dhok was noticed, who opened indiscriminate fire on own troops. In the ensuing fire fight, buddy of Naik Neeraj was hit on bullet proof jacket. With utter disregard to his personal safety, Naik Neeraj crawled and extricated his buddy. A terrorist threw grenades and brought heavy fire on Naik Neeraj. In a daring act, he inched closer to the terrorist and shot him dead. Simultaneously, the NCO was attacked by another terrorist resulting in dropping of his Rifle and the terrorist shot him in the chest. Despite grievous injuries, displaying unparallel courage, he pounced on the terrorist, snatched his weapon and killed him in hand to hand combat. He refused to be evacuated till he became unconscious and was later evacuated but he succumbed to his injuries.
Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh displayed raw courage and most conspicuous gallantry in personally eliminating two terrorists and sacrificing his own life in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
