Despite the terrorists initially evading contact under the cover of night, determined efforts by the teams, led by DSP Dheraj Singh Katoch, SDPO Border, and Insp. Ajay Singh Chib, SHO Police Station Rajbagh, supported by ground intelligence and tireless tracking, narrowed their escape trail into the rugged Bani-Basholi-Billawar belt. On the intervening night of 26/27 Mar 25, continuous search operation and human intelligence pinpointed the terrorists' likely presence in the thickly forested villages of Soffain and Jothana. Multiple ambushes were laid at strategic locations with meticulous coordination by senior officers. Teams led by DSP Dheraj Singh Katoch and Insp. As the team started heading to the suspected house, sensing danger, terrorists suddenly came out and, in an attempt, to flee from the spot, they resorted to indiscriminate firing on the joint search team. However, HC Bashir Ahmad, who was holding a Light Machine Gun, pinned them down and forced them to retreat. Realizing the fact that HC Bashir Ahmad was the main hindrance, they pin-pointedly targeted him with their sophisticated weapons like M-4, leaving him critically injured. Lieutenant Commander Shivam Kumar, serving as the NBCD Officer onboard INS Trikand, displayed exceptional courage and gallantry during Operation Sanchet in the Gulf of Aden on 18 October 2025. INS Trikand was directed to render immediate assistance to MT Falcon, a Cameroon-flagged LPG tanker that had suffered a catastrophic explosion and major fire in the Houthi Attack Zone. The structurally damaged vessel was adrift, with an uncontrolled fire continuously fuelled by leaking LPG, creating an imminent risk of a devastating secondary explosion. Two Indian crew members were missing and presumed trapped onboard.
Fully aware of the extreme danger posed by explosive LPG vapours, toxic smoke, intense heat, oxygen-deficient compartments, weakened structures and the possibility of hostile action, Lieutenant Commander Shivam Kumar voluntarily led the high-risk operation. He repeatedly entered the burning and gas-filled compartments, conducting dynamic technical and risk assessments and guiding his team through severely damaged and smoke-filled spaces.
Displaying remarkable composure, professional competence and complete disregard for personal safety, he spearheaded repeated internal searches for the missing crew members. 13. 34544, SQUADRON LEADER SUDHIR KUMAR, FLYING (PILOT)
(Effective date of Award: 09 September 2025)
On 09 September 2025, he was authorised to fly as captain of ac for a low-flying and low-level navigation sortie by night from the rear cockpit of the Su-30 MKI aircraft, accompanied by an Under Training (U/T) pilot in the front cockpit. During the recovery phase, at an altitude of 2.2 km and a speed of 740 kmph, the aircraft experienced a catastrophic failure that manifested as violent oscillations in the longitudinal plane accompanied by multiple indicators of Fly By Wire (FBW) system failure. This critical situation resulted in drastic pitch variations ranging from +45 degrees to -15 degrees, extreme g-loads spanning from -1.5 g to +12 g along with Angle of Attack (AOA) indications exceeding 24 units. As the supervisor in the cockpit he demonstrated exceptional situational awareness and airmanship despite experiencing physical forces that exceeded normative limits for human tolerance. Under extreme conditions of rapidly varying g-loads and pitch, he maintained a composed and calm demeanour, swiftly taking control of the situation and instructing the front pilot to reset the failed FBW channels. He exercised exemplary judgment by first corroborating that the critical FBW red light was not illuminated before guiding the front pilot to operate the correct switches.
The ensuing task was extremely demanding given the violent onset of intense g-forces and the rapidity of the manoeuvre that manifested under conditions of total darkness by night. Without any external frame of reference and unable to discern the aircraft instruments due to blurring of vision, he demonstrated extraordinary airmanship and praiseworthy intuition by promptly re-opening power on the aircraft. This prevented a potentially cataclysmic accident that could have occurred due to rapid loss of airspeed. Throughout the emergency he displayed absolute professionalism and composure, and maintained apt responsiveness despite being in extreme physical agony while struggling to stay conscious and remain oriented. Furthermore, he demonstrated outstanding leadership and supervisory acumen by guiding and reassuring the U/T pilot in the front cockpit. These gallant actions highlight exceptional bravery in taking precise and correct measures under extreme pressure.
