New Delhi , the 14th December , 1949 .
No. 10462-0om/ 49.-The Government of India deeply regret to record the sudden and premature death , at the age of 89 , of Shri S. M. Srivastava , 1.C.S. , Joint Vice - Chairman , Indian Council of Agricultural Research , and ex- officio Joint Secretary to the Govern- ment of India , Ministry of Agriculture , on the evening of the 4th December , 1949 .
2. Shri Srivastava entered the Indian Civil Service in the year 1934 and was first appointed under the U. P. Government . He joined the Central Board of Revenue as Additional Collector of Central Excise in 1948 and in 1944 he was appointed Secretary , Indian Council of Agricultural Research , a post which he held with credit and distinction . From February , 1945 to July , 1948 , he was Deputy Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of E. H. & L. and in the Ministry of Agriculture . When the post of Secretary , Indian Council of Agricultural Research fell vacant in 1948 , the choice again fell on him and he was appointed to this post with the ex - officio status of Deputy Secretary to the Government of India . In May 1949 , he was appointed Joint Vice- Chairman , Indian Council of Agricultural Research , with ex - officio status of a Joint Secretary to the Government of India accorded recently .
3. By his untimely death , Govemment have lost a straightfor . ward, able and conscientious officer , whose loss will be mourned by all his colleagues . The Government of India offer their sincere condolences to the bereaved family .
