No. 3 / 1 / 63 - Pub.II . The President has learnt with deep regret the death on the afternoon of Wednesday , the 13th February , 1963 , of Shri Balwant Nagesh Datar , Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs .
Born on August 13 , 1894, at Tasgaon , Satara , Shri Datar attained distinction at an early age as an educationist and advocate . He was closely associated with the Universities of Bombay and Karnatak as member of the Senate and Faculty of Arts and Law . He was a member of the first Lok Sabha and was appointed Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1952. He became a Minister of State in the same Ministry in 1955. He was re - elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957 and again in 1962. On both occasions , he was re- appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs in which capacity he continued to serve till the end.
As a Minister , Shri Datar showed great devotion to work and served the country unremittingly . His genial personality and courteous manners endeared him to all who came in contact with him. He was keenly interested in the uplift of the backward classes , and scheduled castes and tribes . His sudden death is a great loss to the country .
