STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS
The Preventive Detention Act , 1950 , is due to expire on the 31st December , 1963. The primary reason for the enactment of this legislation was to protect the country against activities intended to subvert the Constitution and the maintenance of law and order or to interfere with the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community . Experience in the working of the Act has shown that this legislation has proved an effective instrument specially in the maintenance of law and order . In these circumstances , it is considered essential that the powers conferred by the Preventive Detention Act should be continued . It is accordingly proposed to extend the Act for a further period of three years .
