STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS

The object of the BUI is to amend the Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament Act, 1954 with a view to entitle the members of Parliament to draw a daily allowance at an increased rate of fifty rupees for each day during any period of residence on duty in- stead of thirty-one rupees as at present in lieu of salary of five hund- red rupees per mensem.

The Bill also seeks to provide members with free postal facilities and two third-class sleeping berth railway passes Instead of one first-class pass.

Membera often pass their retired lives in destitution after having served the nation for one or two terms. It is, therefore, proposed that a member who has completed two full terms as a member of Parliament consecutively or otherwise, should be entitled to receive a pension in the same manner as is admissible to a Central Govern- ment employee. Pension will be a boon to members in old age.
