STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS
The Bill seeks to amend the First Schedule to the Indian 'Tariff Act, 1934 ( 32 of 1934 ) , in order to continue up to the 31st Decem- ber , 1974 the protection to the Sericulture Industry , which is in force at present up to the 31st December , 1969. The opportunity has also been taken to effect a slight rationalisation of the existing rates of protective duty on ( i) Silk yarn , including silk sewing thread , and silk waste [ Items Nos . 40 (1 ) , 47 and 17 ( 1) ] and ( ii) Silk fabrics (Item No. 48 ) , by adopting a single rate of duty in each case instead of the varying rates in force at present , as the differences have ceased to have any special significance . The modifications proposed are indicated below in greater detail :-
