The following Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on the 23rd

BILL NO. XVII OF 1987

A Bill further to amend the Coconut Development Board Act, ]979.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Thirty-eighth Year of the Republic

of India as follows: —

1. This Act may be called the Coconut Development Board (Amend- Short title.

ment) Act, 1987.

Amend- ment of 2. In section 4 of the Coconut Development Board Act, 1979, in sub- section (4), in clause (b), for the words "the Agriculture Commissioner", the words "the Horticulture Commissioner" shall be substituted.

Act 6 of 1979.

( 1) 2 THE GAZETTE OF 1N&TA EXTRAORDINARY [PART II—SEC 2]

STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS

When the Coconut Development Board Act was enacted in 1979, horticultural and plantation crops were handled in. the Crops Division headed by the, Agriculture Commissioner In the Department of Agri- culture and Co-operation and, accordingly, he was included as ex officio member of the Board. With the importance that the horticultural programmes have acquired and their contribution to the national eco- nomy, a separate! full-fledged Division, known as Horticulture Division, headed by the Horticulture Commissioner, has been established. As the work of coconut development at the national level and that of the Coconut Development Board is being looked after by the Horticulture Commissioner, it is necessary that he may be made an ex officio member of the Board in place of the Agriculture Commissioner for taking effec- tive participation in the activities of the Board by amending the Act.

2. The Bill seeks to achieve the above object.
