Ladakh, the 1st of December, 2022

Subject: Notification of Hanle Dark Sky Reserve (Night Sky Sanctuary)

The cluster of six hamlets of revenue village Hanle (Anlay) comprising Bhok, Shado, Punguk, Khuldo, Naga & Tibetan Refugee habitations within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, situated around the Indian Astronomical Observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) spread over 1073 sq. km area, which has been identified by the Wildlife Department of the UT of Ladakh in consultation with the local community, IIA & the Ladakh Autonomous Development Council Leh, is hereby notified as 'Hanle Dark Sky Reserve' entailing reduction of artificial light pollution for the purposes of wildlife conservation, promoting livelihoods through eco-friendly activity of Astro-tourism, spreading awareness and education about Astronomy and for strengthening scientific research. LADAKH GAZETTE : EXTRAORDINARY 2 After this notification, reduction in the light pollution shall be taken up voluntarily by the village community members of Hanle (Anlay) and other government departments / agencies stationed in this area.

Map indicating the geographical coordinates of the 'Hanle Dark Sky Reserve' is appended as Annexure-1.
