MAHARASHTRA ORDINANCE No. IV OF 2019
AN ORDINANCE
further to amend the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016.
WHEREAS, both Houses of the State Legislature are not in session ;

VI of 2017.

NOW, THEREFORE, in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of article 213 of the Consitution of India, the Governor of Maharashtra is hereby pleased to promulgate the following Ordinance, namely :—
1. (1) This Ordinance may be called the Maharashtra Public Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.
Short title and commen- cement.
(2) It shall come into force at once.
2. In the SCHEDULE to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, in Mah. VI of 2017.
PART I, in entry 10, in column (1), for the words "The Solapur University, Solapur" the words "The Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur", shall Amendment of SCHEDULE to Mah. VI of 2017.
be substituted.

The Solapur University, Solapur has been constituted in the year, 2004 for the area of Solapur District vide the Government Notification, Higher and Technical Education Department No. USG. 1004/(94/2004)UNI-1, dated the 22nd July 2004.
Considering the precious and exemplary work of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar in the field of education, literature, administration, leadership and social reforms, the Management Council of the Solapur University has passed the resolution and recommended the State Government to extend the name of "the Solapur University, Solapur" as "the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur". The Government has also received representations from the peoples' representatives to give the name of the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar to the Solapur University, Solapur.
2. The action of constituting Sub-committee of Ministers for taking decision regarding change of name of the Solapur University, Solapur has been challenged before the High Court of Judicature at Bombay in Public Interest Litigation (ST) No. 8458 of 2018. During the hearing of the said PIL, a statement has been made on behalf of the Government that the Sub-committee of Ministers would not take any decision, unless all the concerned organisations are given an opportunity of hearing.
The said Sub-committee has given hearing to all the concerned organisations and decided to rename the said University as "the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur, Solapur".
3. After considering the report of the said Sub-committee, it is considered expedient to extend the name of "The Solapur University, Solapur" as "The Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur, by amending the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 (Mah. VI of 2017), suitably.
4. As both Houses of the State Legislature are not in session and the Governor of Maharashtra is satisfied that cirucumstances exsit which render it necessary for him to take immediate action further to amend the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 (Mah. VI of 2017), for the purposes aforesaid, this Ordinance is promulgated.
