Notification No.18/19/2025-AH2 (3)/426.- The Governor of Punjab is hereby pleased to declare Labeo rohita , commonly known as 'Rohu', as the State Fish of Punjab. Labeo rohita (Rohu) is a freshwater fish commonly found in rivers, lakes and ponds across the Indian subcontinent. In Punjab, it is found in rivers such as the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi and is abundantly cultured in ponds and reservoirs. Being a highly cultured fish, it serves as a majior source of income for fish farmers in the state.

This fish has a compressed, fusiform body with a short, blunt snout and fringed lower lip. Its body is covered with large, overlapping cycloid scales, 'Rohu' fish is fast-growing species that can reach up to 45kg in body weight in natural water bodies. Its spawning occurs from June to September. The fecundity (egg lalying capcity) of this fish is 2.00-2.50 lakhs per kg of body weight. The Fisheries Department, Punjab has well developed hatcheries infrastructure for its induced breeding.

Givern its economic importance in aquaculture and widespread consumption in North India, it is essential to sustainably manage and conserve natural stocks of 'Rohu' fish. This is being addressed through river rancing initiatives and the effective implementation of conservation regulations.
